In this session we explore strategies for assessing literacy skills (i.e., reading and writing) emergent bilingual students' languages. We will begin with a quiz on the assigned reading taken on Blackboard and then discuss the material and assessment procedures.
1. Describe the theories that explain the receptive-expressive gap in bilingual children with and without primary language development.
2. What did Gibson and colleagues find in their study of bilingual children?
3. Describe Klingner's approach to distinguishing language acquisition from learning disabilities.
4. Describe some of the misconceptions about English language learners.
