Open Educational Resource (OER) created for Professor Elizalde-Utnick's SPCL 7900 course.

TASK LIST TO PREPARE FOR ZOOM SESSION

Please complete the following PRIOR to our Zoom session on October 27:

1. Readings

READ the assigned readings (DT 11&12 and Practice Article).

3:40 Section: Laura & Yany: Schubert Center for Child Studies (2014). Play, implicit bias and discrimination in early childhood: Implications for child development.

Discussion Questions for 3:40 Class:

  • In the article, we learned that Black children are greatly affected by implicit bias which in turn affects their academic achievements and self esteem. How can we, as future school psychologists, move away from any implicit bias we may have and make Black students, or even students of color, feel accepted and appreciated in the classroom?
  • According to research, there’s an association of school-to-prison pipeline and zero-tolerance policies. What can be an alternative for out-of-school suspensions and expulsions in preschools?
  • Given the extensive research linking play to better coping and problem solving skills in children, do you believe it will be beneficial to add imaginative play to the curriculum for grades pk-2 to enhance students’ coping skills?

6:30 Section: Michelle & Glorimar: Perszyk et al (2018). Bias at the Intersection of Race and Gender: Evidence from Preschool-Aged Children

Discussion Questions for 6:30 Class:

  • How can children learn more about race and unlearn racism?
  • How can parental figures promote conversations about racism to young children?
  • This article explored how pre school aged children have biases towards Black children, with Black male children receiving more negative biases when compared to Black female children, as well as White males and females. How do you think these biases affect Black male children as they grow older?

2. Videos
