Tasks Due on May 30

7. Go to Brightspace and submit Journal Entry: “Exploring Cultural Messages, Heritage, and Cultural Humility

  1. a. Reflect on messages you received in childhood/adolescence (either direct or indirect, verbal or nonverbal) from elder family members about other cultures, races, and religions. What are some negative and positive stereotypes you learned at this time and how did you react then? What are your thoughts now? (adapted from Gallardo, p. 47)
  2.
  3. b. Our names tell a lot about who we are and where we came from. Do you know what your first, middle, and last names mean or refer to? Where does your name come from? Why were you given these names? Have you ever thought of changing your name or have you changed your name? Why? Has anyone ever assumed you were a particular ethnicity because of your name? Were they correct? Partially correct? All wrong? (adapted from Korn, 2016)
  4.
  5. c. Using the Sociocultural Identity Wheel from the lecture video, engage in the activity as directed on the slide. What identities did you fill into the boxes? Which two or three did you circle as being the most important for you? How does intersectionality factor in with your multiple identities?
  6.
  7. d. What is the most important point made in the Loue readings? What question(s) do you have about the readings?
  8.
  9. e. Look at the list of the key elements of cultural humility in Table 6.2 on p. 108 of the assigned reading. While they are all key elements, if you had to pick one as being the most important one, which would you select and why?
