Unit Two casts a wide look at the art of East Asia problematizing issues of Asia in the Western mind. We will examine Japan, Korea and China, looking first at the postwar era and addressing their different political situations from the American occupation of Japan to the rise of Maoism in China. Each section of the unit will conclude with contemporary artists from these countries who exhibit internationally today focusing on Ai Weiwei and others.
