Reading Oquibe’s essay, “Heart of Darkness” this unit addresses Africa’s plurality and problematizes notions of primitivism and tourist production. It begins with Senegal, post independence, and notions of Negritude. We will look at the wonderful photographs by Malick Sidibe and contextualize them to 1960’s Mali. Finally we will turn to contemporary diasporic artists such as Sonibari, El Anatsui and Chris Ofili.
