We will discuss how differing rates of acculturation can lead to breakdowns in communication between family members. We will use the film El Norte as case material for discussion.
Did you experience acculturative family distancing growing up? If so, do you recall when it started happening? What was the tipping point? We will discuss this in class, and this will come up when you read a selection from Richard Rodriguez's Hunger of Memory.
