Course Components for Professor Marin CASD 1114 Fall 2022

Attendance is expected and necessary for optimal comprehension of the material. Each student is expected to be respectful and contribute to class discussions. I am aware that every student has a different level of comfort in the classroom; thus, please feel free to e-mail me your thoughts, ideas, and questions about the course content at the end of class.

  • If you have an excused absence (i.e., illness, family emergency, religious observance, etc.), please e-mail me as soon as possible.
  • If you are unable to attend a class, it is your responsibility to obtain the notes, handouts, assignments, etc., from that day.
  • Blackboard is utilized for submission of response papers and slides.
  • We will be having one asynchronous session during the semester where the students will be assigned a response paper based on a film documentary.
  • This course uses Open Educational Resources (OER), meaning all readings and videos are free and can be found on at CASD 1114 (Department Site) url https://libguides.brooklyn.cuny.edu/casd1114.

If need help, please do not hesitate to ask.

Students are encouraged to participate in class, we will be having discussions related to the lectures presented in each class.

Two Response Papers are assigned, totaling 30%

Students will write one Response Paper for a film or documentary (15%). Response Papers will be graded of your understanding of the concepts presented in the film, as well as your clarity of writing.

The second response (15%) paper will be related to a case study base on class materials and lecture, the students will have to submit on blackboard. Details and grading rubrics will be discussed prior to the assigned due date.

Midterm (25%) and final exam (20%)

  • The midterm and final examinations will be based on the class lectures and materials.
  • The exams will cover everything we have discussed in class. In studying, focus on the lectures.
  • Reading the assigned readings will help students prepare for the exams.
  • The final exam will focus more on the materials we covered after the midterm.
  • The exams will have multiple choices, matching, true/false, fill-in the blank, and short essay questions.
  • Review sheets will be given to students before each examination.

Missing a test without receiving explicit verbal permission from me personally beforehand automatically results in a zero and drops your overall grade 20%. A makeup test will be given only at my discretion and convenience. Sending me an email does not constitute receiving verbal permission unless I have responded to you.

Final Project/Presentation 25%:

  • This is a 1-page writing done by groups of 2 to 3. (Please use Times New Roman, single space).
  • Be sure to add only relevant information and the specific answer for the question below. Each group will submit one paper.
  • Anything submitted beyond the page limit will be disregarded.
  • The goal of this paper is to introduce the student to explore and motivate them to learn about diverse Speech and Language Disorders.
  • The students will choose a topic from the list presented below, investigate, and cover the points mentioned above.
    • Please email me the topic for approval first.
  • Also, if there is any other topic the students want to choose that is fine but confirm with me first through email. We can discuss in class if there are any questions related to the final project and presentation.
  • A short description and definition of the topic, key symptoms, and how they relate to speech and language disorders. (b)  Provide an example of how as an educator you could manage having a student with the topic chosen.
