Course Summary

In this course, students will study the normal acquisition of speech and language in infants, children, and adolescents. Speech and language development will be studied in relation to the development of cognitive, perceptual, motor, emotional, and social skills. Theories of language acquisition and methods of assessing language will be discussed. The emergence of literacy in relation to language development will also be addressed. In addition, lectures will focus on cultural and linguistic variation in language acquisition. Class format will include lecture, organized discussion, and student presentations.

Welcome to CASD 2231 - Speech and Language Development!

My name is Prof. Epstein and I am your instructor for this course. You are invited to join me on an enlightening journey to explore speech and language development. We’ll begin by discussing what infants learn prenatally, and we’ll then move on to examine early cognitive development, infant communication, and the trajectory of speech and language development from toddlerhood through adolescence.

Here’s some important information you’ll need to succeed in this course:

  1. This is a hybrid course, which means that some learning will take place face-to-face in the classroom and other learning will occur online via Blackboard (BB) and our course website, Our schedule of classroom vs. online instruction is included in the syllabus, which is located on this site under the Home link of the menu and in the left-hand menu in Blackboard under Syllabus.
  2. You will need frequent access to the internet.
  3. You’ll be receiving correspondence via the email address that is associated with your BB account. You should have received a welcoming email that contains this announcement. If you have not received it, please log on to BB and under the menu, select Help > Update email.
  4. To receive technical support with BB, you can access information in BB under Help in the menu. Alternatively, you may call the Brooklyn College Help desk at 718-951-4357.
  5. This is a 4-credit course that is content heavy with multiple assignments. Be sure to log on to BB frequently and to stay abreast of the due dates for assignments. Points will be deducted for late submissions.
  6. Feel free to use the Q & A Forum to email me with questions. I am here to support you in progressing through this course.
  7. Start by carefully reviewing the syllabus and noting in your planner the due dates for assignments.
