Sociology: Social Issues

The library's sociology research guide contains information on library resources like books, e-books, data sources, scholarly, and peer-reviewed journals.

Social Problems and Social Issues

Are you looking to do a controversial or polarizing topics like gun control, terrorism, immigration, or racism?  The library suggests two databases where you can get background information on controversial social issues where it is likely to bias on the information you find on the Internet. Background information includes:

  • chronologies of important events
  • legal cases and laws related to a social problem or social issues
  • articles that take a particular side or perspective
  • bibliographies
  • popular and peer-reviewed articles

Looking for bias in research is an important part of understanding information, and databases like CQ Researcher and Opposing Viewpoints in Context will help you understand the variety of perspectives around a social problem. Gale Virtual Reference Library contains many specialized subject encyclopedias that are also useful in understanding the background of a social issue or topic.

You can browse social issues in Opposing Viewpoints by clicking on "Browse Issues."  This will list the issues alphabetically. Click on an issue, in the example below I chose "Race Relations." There will be a brief explanation of the particular social issue, in this case "Race Relations," and directly to the left will be a menu of useful resources.
