Online Class

  • Classes will be delivered in both synchronous and asynchronous modes. All lectures, Q&A/discussions will be held during the class time. All students are expected to attend/ participate in the Q&A and discussions.
  • The lecture sessions will be conducted via zoom and they will not be recorded. Recordings may be done (with permission) to review periodically during the semester as long as they are not shared.

IMPORTANT: If you do not have reliable and regular access to a desktop or laptop computer, headphones or internet access please go to the Brooklyn College Device Loan Requests/Returns to request equipment. Brooklyn College has Chromebooks, Laptops, iPads, Headphones and T-Mobile Hotspots that can be loaned to you. 

Course Description

This course focuses on survey of speech, language, and communication disorders for educators. It includes the consideration of varied disorders that might be encountered in educational settings; application to children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Students will understand the differences between speech, language, and communication.
  2. Students will be able to identify the etiology and characteristics of various communication disorders.
  3. Students will understand the roles of various school-based professionals and the importance of collaboration among these professionals to support students with communicative disorders.
  4. Students will learn about various methods of assessment and treatment for communication disorders.
  5. Students will develop cultural sensitivity regarding communication differences and disorders.

Course Textbook

This course is a zero cost/open educational resources course.  That means there is no textbook students need to purchase. All materials are available freely to students online on the CASD 1114-Hanini OER site (what you are on right now) and Blackboard blackboard logo..

  • Faculty & staff renew every year.
  • Students have access until graduation.
    • renewal requires working CUNY.edu address.  

NY Times: Anyone who initiates an account will have an active subscription for one year from the date she/he creates the account. If you already have an annual subscription to the NYTimes, you can cancel it and will receive a refund. However, if you only have a monthly subscription, the New York Times will not issue a refund for that month.
