eBooks: Different Formats

Library eBooks are hosted on many different platforms. Each platform has its own rules and style but will try to make clear how to use the eBook.

Can I use Kindle?

Probably not. Academic eBook platforms work differently than Amazon or the Public Libraries. There may be an alternative app, often Adobe Digital Editions.

We recommend either reading the eBook on your browser (no downloads) or downloading segments (when available).

Common formats

  • Read online: No downloads, simply read on your browser. May have the option to create an account so you can bookmark pages. Occasionally this option will be temporarily unavailable if all copies are being used at the same time.
  • Download chapters: Ability to download chapters one at a time. Some eBooks allow you to download all chapters, others will have a page limit.
  • Download pages: Ability to download a certain number of pages per eBook. The amount varies per eBook and will be stated on the eBook landing page.
  • "Download" with Adobe Digital Editions: Ability to "download" the eBook to read on the app Adobe Digital editions. Comes with a time limit which is often 7, 14, oe 21 days. After this time the eBook will be removed from the app. You can usually "download" it again if needed but any bookmarks or annotations will be lost.
