Transfer Student LOOP: Essentials/Read This First!

Using the Library for Research

Many transfer students return to their former institutions to use their Library resources. However, don't feel like you have to! It is probable that the Brooklyn College Library has many of the same resources that your other library had. In fact, if you transferred here from another CUNY school, you will likely see familiar resources, such as OneSearch and JSTOR, since the CUNY library system shares access to many major resources.

Under normal circumstances as a Brooklyn College student, you can use any other CUNY library when they're open (including the one you transferred from, if that's the case). Currently, there might be limited or no access to other campuses. Please check at the Reference Desk (Library First Floor, when we're open) or Ask A Librarian to see if we have what you're looking for at BC. You can also chat with a librarian 24/7! And, check with individual libraries to see if they are open, and/or if they have any restrictions to visiting their sites.

Your CUNY & BC Accounts

One of the most important pieces of advice we give new transfer students is to know the logins and passwords for all of your accounts.

  • First, claim your CUNYFirst account (if you haven't already done so).
  • Then, register for your BC WebCentral account.
  • Blackboard: If your instructors use Blackboard for course content, you will log in using your CUNYfirst Username@login.cuny.edu, and CUNYfirst Password.
  • Your EMPLID: If you transferred here from another CUNY school, your EMPLID is the same 8-digit number. To find your EMPLID, log in to either CUNYFirst or BC WebCentral. In CUNYFirst, your EMPLID will be at the top of the screen. In BC WebCentral, once you've logged in, click on the My Info tab on the left hand side of the screen.
  • Your BC Email: Your BC Email ID gives you access to your Student Email Account and Microsoft Office 365. Your email account is used for official communications from CUNY and your online courses in Blackboard. Your Brooklyn College Email ID is assigned to you automatically. It is typically in the form of your CUNYfirst username followed by bcmail.cuny.edu (e.g. your.username##@bcmail.cuny.edu). You can access your email at www.office.com.

Note: You need to know your EMPLID to sign in to a computer in the computer labs and to access the campus printing system and WiFi. More on this later.

Note: Your EMPLID is not the same number on your physical and virtual ID cards (your barcode number). The number on your physical/virtual ID is your Library Barcode Number and Password. More on this later.
