Finding Books

Use OneSearch to search for books at Brooklyn College or in all CUNY libraries.  If Brooklyn’s copy is checked out, you can have it delivered from another CUNY school by clicking the Request a Copy button. Here are some ways to search our catalog for books:

Title begins with...            
Use when you know the exact title of a book or the first few words in the title. Tip: Drop initial articles (a, an, the, la, les etc.) when performing a title search.
Author, last name first...                            
Use when you do not have a book title, or you want to find other books written by an author.
Subject begins with...        
Search the catalog for a subject. Remember that people can also be subjects! Tip: To find books by an author, click on the author tab in the search window; for books about an author, click on the subject tab.

Basic Search Types in OneSearch

All Fields
Search for your terms in the subject, title and author fields.
e.g.  “clinical depression” AND “children
e.g.  neuroscience AND psychology
e.g.  adolescent AND development
e.g.  (teen OR teenager) AND stress

Tip:  Connect two or more keywords with AND/OR.
Tip:  Find books with title and author as key terms.
Tip: Use quotation marks to search for an exact phrase (two words or more).

Title begins with...            
Use when you know the exact title of a book.
e.g. basic writings of Sigmund Freud (not the basic writings of Sigmund Freud) Tip: Do not use initial articles (a, an, the, la, les etc.).
e.g. development of thought Tip: Type just the first words of a title, e.g. this search returns: the development of thought: equilibration of cognitive structures

Author, last name first...                            
Use when you do not have a book title, or you want to find other books written by an author.
e.g.  freud sigmund                         
e.g.   jean piaget            
e.g.  alfred bandura

Subject begins with...        
Search the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) for your topic.  
e.g. Adolescent psychology
e.g. Adolescent psychology—cross cultural studies
e.g. Freud, Sigmund 1856-1939

Tip: Use Browse Search if you are looking for books about an individual’s work/life.

ip: If you do not know the exact subject heading, try a basic keyword subject or ask a librarian.                                                       

e.g. “adolescent psychology”                            
e.g. “psychological assessment”                         
e.g. “clinical psychology”                                         

Tip: Use parts of the title/topic when you don’t know the exact title.
