UNIT VIII: DECOLONIZATION AND THE MODERN WORLD

Nov 30

Decolonization and Modern Nationalism

In this class we will consider the profound impact of decolonization on the realignments in the modern world.

Assignment: reread in textbook Chapter; 14.4-14.5 (pp. 610–627).

Also to be completed BEFORE CLASS : Watch at home The Battle of Algiers (entire) [link is online on blackboard];read also Shillington, History of Africa, 378-382(blackboard).

As you prepare for class and watch the film, please consider the following : what are the the differences in the quarters in which Europeans and Algerians lived (pay attention to architecture, resources, cleanliness, as well as who controls infrastructure). What does the relationship seem to be between the French and Algerians in Algiers ?  How and why does resistance manifest itself among Algierians against the French ? How do the French justify or defend their control of Algiers/Algieria, let alone their uses of torture ? What do you think might be some of the legacies of the Algierian resistence to the French ? Why do you think that this film is a useful tool for discussion of processes of decolonization.

Also consider the continued role of decolonization in the modern world. Do you think it is important to consider ? Why or why not ?

In this class meeting, we will watch excerpts from the movie, which you watch in its entirety before the class meeting.

The World Today : Contemporary World and Ongoing Challenges.

Assignment: Read in OER textbook chapter 15 (pp. 621–672)

Questions to consider : How would you describe the trends that dominate the world today ? How have movements of Civil Rights and decolonization shaped the modern day? If yes, how, and if not, why not ? Do you think that there is a ‘new’ type of nationalism emerging ? If so, how does it differ from that popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ? What are relationships between concepts of globalization and nationalism? How do you think that those concepts, in turn, have changed in the past centuries ? How, if at all, do you think the world has or has not changed since the late 1400s/1500s ?
