Suggestions for finding ethnographies in OneSearch
A good way to start is using the term social life and customs combined with terms such as:
the name of a people or ethic group | --> | Muslim women and social life and customs |
geographic location | --> | Mauritania and social life and customs |
You can also try a keyword search with cultural terms such as religion or marriage or kinship, for example:
Indians of North America and kinship
Kikuyu and hunting rituals
South America and marriage customs
You can also try a keyword search with the term ethnograph* which finds materials with the words "ethnography", "ethnographic", "ethnograph", etc.
Ainu and ethnograph*
India and ethnograph*
stockbrokers and ethnograph*
Finally, you can try keyword searches for populations or groups or activities of many kinds, but until you actually look at the book it can be difficult to determine if it is an ethnography or another kind of writing (journalism, sociology, history, etc.); for example:
sanitation workers
Hasidi*
Not sure what you are looking for? You can use the call number prefixes to guide you to the right section of the stacks so you can browse the collection.
Try browsing the shelves around the following call numbers:
GN: Anthropology (General)
GN 49 - GN 298: Physical Anthropology
GN 301 - GN 673: Ethnology, Social and Cultural Anthropology
GN 700 - GN 890: Prehistoric Archaeology
GF: Human Ecology
GR: Folklore
GT: Manners and Customs (General)
P: Linguistics
CC: Archaeology
Ethnographies written about cultures may be shelved in the history section for that individual country (e.g. Asia = DS, Africa = DT).
But remember, Anthropology covers a wide range of topics. You may find titles of interest under many other call numbers - so search by topic in OneSearch.
