RUSS 1020 Elementary Russian II: 
3 hours, 1 hour multimedia laboratory; 3 credits
Second in a two-semester sequence. Expanded acquisition of phonetics and writing systems. Development of communicative skills and cultural awareness through extensive classroom interaction and a variety of multimedia materials. Designed to prepare students for Russian 1030. (Not open to heritage speakers.) Qualifies as a LOTE (Language Other Than English) course for Pathways College Option purposes.
Prerequisite: Russian 1010 or permission of the chairperson.

About Russian 1010

Course Description:

Continued study of modern Russian language. Emphasis on listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, more complex functional and interpersonal communication, and culture, through multiple approaches including audio, video and computer components, and supporting study of more advanced principles of grammar.  Students will use differ types of authentic on-line and cultural materials to reach these goals.

Course Outcome(s):
Cultural knowledge and comprehension: Demonstrate sensitivity to the beliefs, views, values, and practices of Russian speaking cultures within and beyond the United States, respect and accept cultural differences, and express a willingness to achieve culturally appropriate communication.

1. Oral communication: Demonstrate effective communication orally in order to provide and obtain information, compare and contrast opinions, explain emotions and feelings. Demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication for an intended audience that is clear, organized, and delivered effectively following the standard conventions of that language.
2. Written communication: Demonstrate effective communication in writing in order to provide and obtain information, compare and contrast opinions, explain emotions and feelings.                                                          3. Interpretive Reading: Demonstrate understanding of thoughts and/or feelings of an author, define the author's meaning and emotions, and demonstrate an ability to read aloud in Russian using vocal techniques and clear articulation.                                                                                                                                                                 4. Interpretive Listening: Demonstrate ability to interpret the meaning of spoken words of a native speaker, recognize some of the concealed expressions of the speaker, and summarize details in the information being conveyed.

Objective(s):
1. Demonstrate a greater degree of fluency and improved intonation in speaking.
2. Demonstrate comprehension and application of more sophisticated elements of Russian grammar.
3. Comprehend spoken Russian in controlled speech of greater difficulty.
4. Respond conversationally, adding more detail on everyday subjects

Course Materials and Requirements

  3. Download Assessments on Blackboard or access the course website.

Other Requirements:

Lab assignments is obligatory and submitted for credit.                                                                               Cultural Component discussion board review and annotate video material Slavic / Russian history.

Course Policies

Grade for the course:

The variety of skills and activities in this course --listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, culture, lab work, homework.

Tests 2 (10 pts each) - 20%
Discussion Board: - 20%                                                                                                                                            Weekly routine homework assignments: 10  - 20%
Lab assignments: 15 (1 pt each) - 15%
Final (oral and written) - 25%.

  1. Basic grammar: nouns. Function: identifying greater number of objects with nouns.
    1. Diminutive forms of animate and inanimate nouns
    2. Accusative singular- animate and inanimate
    3. Irregular plural
    4. Genitive singular and plural- possession
    5. Prepositional plural- location
    6. Accusative plural- direct object
    7. Dative singular and plural - indirect object
  2. Basic grammar: adjectives. Function: Describing people, objects and places.
    1. Prepositional singular and plural. Function: expressing location of people and objects
    2. Accusative singular and plural. Function: describing people, objects and places
    3. Genitive singular and plural
    4. Dative singular and plural
    5. Russian last names that decline like adjectives
  3. Basic grammar: verbs
    1. Irregular verb "TO BE"
    2. Verbal aspect: perfective and imperfective. Function: ability to distinguish between continuing and completed action.
    3. Using adverbs of time with verbs

    5. Future tense of imperfective verbs
    6. Future tense of perfective verbs g. Second conjugation of verbs

    1. Intonation in sentences with contrasting and coordinating conjunctions

  5. Basic grammar: numbers (Russian grammatical category). Function: ability to describe amount or quantity of objects or people.
