The Papers of Lauretta Bender

Schilder and Bender: 20th Century Psychological Theory

Dr. Lauretta Bender (1897-1987) pioneered the use of art therapy for children, notably the use of puppet shows at Bellevue Hospital in NYC.   The Papers of Dr. Lauretta Bender are comprised primarily of materials covering the years 1926-1968 when she was affiliated with Bellevue and Creedmoor Hospitals.

Writings and documents related to Dr. Paul Schilder (Lauretta's husband) and John O’ Bender (Loretta’s father) can also be found within this collection.  The photograph to the left is of Dr. Schilder with a a group of fellow Austrian soldiers during World War I. More information on Dr. Schilder can be found in this blog post.

The Finding Aid to the Papers of Dr. Lauretta Bender is on CUNY Academic Works.
