Unit 6 ranges from Lichtenstein’s art to current practitioners of comic abstraction. Comic art is surveyed from Krazy Kat in the thirties to EC comics and its backlash in the McCarthyite comics code of the mid-fifties. We chart the rise of Mad Magazine and the underground comics from Crumb to Trina Robbins and parallel their work to the late paintings of Philip Guston.
